Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro expects this years trade period to heat up quickly following day one of talks at Etihad Stadium.

The club’s recruiting team met with officials from all of the other clubs in the competition on Monday as the ten-day exchange period got underway.

With the length of the period shortened in length this year the Bombers list manager is expecting more deals to be done by the end of the first week.

“Trade period is only two weeks this year and I think things will really begin to pick up by the end of the week,” he said.

“Our strategy is quiet clear in that if we could get a quality player for Paddy then we would look at that or top end draft selections because we think that is what he is worth.”

“If you can improve your national draft selections you will always look at doing that.”

Dodoro said the club was a chance to bring in some players from other clubs but its main focus was on improving its position for November’s national draft.

“We have been out of the draft last year and there is sanctions again this year so if we could get a couple of early picks that would be nice,” he said.

“A lot of our players are signed, we haven’t got a lot of movement on our list so there won’t be a lot of change.”

“There are a couple of players we are looking at that might come in also from other clubs.”

“It is a good draft but they are always judged three to five years after the event.”

“If we can get another early pick that would be nice.”

Essendon currently has selection 20 in the draft following the announcement of Melbourne receiving pick 3 as compensation for the loss of free agent James Frawley.

Port Adelaide have put their first round selection, pick 16 on the table, but the Bombers are seeking a quality player in return for the in form big man.
