Midfielder Brendon Goddard has praised Essendon’s younger players for their performances over the first two rounds of the season.

Marty Gleeson and Patrick Ambrose both impressed during their AFL debut in round 1 and backed it up with strong performances against Hawthorn on Friday night.

Goddard said the pair had both showed positive signs during the start of their AFL career.

“Marty has got some real class about him and he is really calm under pressure for such a young kid in just his second game,” Goddard said.

“Patty Ambrose is the best athlete that I have seen in my time in football. His work rate, his ability to do what the team needs and wants him to do is outstanding.”

“They are two young guys that are standing out at the moment.”

Gleeson has gathered 14 possessions and 17 possessions in his first two matches in the absence of injured half back Courtenay Dempsey.

Ambrose booted three goals against Hawthorn on Friday night to follow up a strong first game against North Melbourne.
