After an impressive pre-season campaign half back Martin Gleeson has put his name in contention for a senior debut in the club’s season opener against North Melbourne on March 21.
A spot in the senior side has opened for Gleeson, Zach Merrett or Jason Ashby after Courtenay Dempsey was ruled out of playing in Round one.
Coach Mark Thompson said the trio were all pushing claims for a senior debut in Round One.
“Jason Ashby we have been really pleased with and maybe Zach Merrett (for a debut),” Thompson said.
“We wouldn’t play three of them and I think Gleeson would be in front at the moment.”
Gleeson performed well in all three of his pre-season matches against Gold Coast, Port Adelaide and Richmond averaging 16 disposals a game off halfback.
The 19-year-old moved from a halfback flank to a wing against Richmond on Friday afternoon and displayed his attacking prowess moving forward to kick a goal.
Thompson said the lightly framed Gleeson was continuing to impress the club’s coaches.
“He would be a good chance to play, we are really happy with his development,” Thompson said.
“He doesn’t look like he is physically ready but he is a good player, good decision maker and is a good user of the ball.”
“We like him a lot and see him playing across the wing and half back for us.”
