Ahead of Sunday afternoon's big clash against Melbourne at the MCG, essendonfc.com.au brings you the likely key match ups set to have a significant influence on the outcome of the game.
Heath Hocking vs. Nathan Jones
This matchup will not be one for the feint-hearted as these two blokes are known for not shying away from the hard ball. The Melbourne skipper, Nathan Jones has been a constant shining light for the Demons through their darkest days, and as they look to have turned the corner, Jones has taken his game to another level. Averaging a career-high, 28.3 disposals and almost five tackles, Jones has been considered by many to be in All-Australian contention this season. Hocking will have his work cut out for him trying to stop the Dees captain, but if one man was be successful in putting the breaks on Jones, Hocking would be near the top of the list.
Cale Hooker vs. Chris Dawes
The Melbourne big man is due for a big game on Sunday afternoon after being out of form in recent weeks. Dawes is a match-winner for the Demons, taking crucial contested marks in their forward half and kicking long-range goals. Combine this with his immense tackling pressure and he is a barometer for the Melbourne side. Hooker is playing his 100th game against Melbourne and will need to continue his career best form to limit Dawes’ influence on the contest.
Jake Carlisle vs. Lyndon Dunn
With Michael Hurley set to come into the side, Carlisle looks likely to be making a move forward. Regaining some great form in defence during Hurley’s absence, Carlisle will try to emulate it up forward for the Bombers and get back on the scoring sheet. Dunn too has been in great form down back for the Dees, playing a blinder against Collingwood in the Queen’s Birthday clash on Monday. The 27-year-old gathered 24 disposals, including 10 marks and limited Magpie forward Travis Cloke to just two goals. All signs point to a crucial matchup between the high-flying Carlisle and determined Dunn.
David Zaharakis vs. Bernie Vince
Zaharakis and Vince are so alike. Both are genuine goal-kicking midfielders, Zaharakis kicking two goals against the Giants and Vince slamming home a goal in the low scoring contest against Collingwood. Both players are also similar in their rare ability to win the contested ball, spread and hurt the opposition on the outside. Expect this to be more of a one-on-one contest, as both are notorious for breaking the game open when their side needs it most.
