Michael Hurley played a lone hand for the Bombers in the round 19 AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year Award, as Essendon could only manage one vote getter.
Hurley gained five votes for his staring role in defence, helping to shut down the Sydney tall forwards and beginning many chains of attacks for the Bombers with his season-high 29 disposals.
Senior assistant coach Simon Goodwin commended the 24-year-old’s performance.
“Mick is such a competitor and really does compete so well one on one so when the ball is in his vicinity then he competes really well in those contests.”
“He ended up with just under 30 possessions and we spoke about before the game trying to just get him to attack a bit more.”
“He went to where the ball was a bit more and we spoke to him last week about starting to step up and he did that this week.”
Mark Thompson and John Longmire judged Sydney midfielder Luke Parker best on ground as he topped the votes with a perfect 10 after his massive 35-disposal game.
