Michael Hurley looks set to bolster a strong Bombers back line in 2014 with the 193cm big man training with the club’s defensive group during the pre-season.
Hurley has played majority of his 79 matches as a forward after playing as a defender during his junior career.
“So far I have trained every session as a backman, it has been great for me and I feel like I am at home in the back line,”
“I have really been enjoying it, getting to play on some really tough players like Joe Daniher and Paddy Ryder has been great for my development.”
“As a junior I played my entire career as a backman, I feel pretty comfortable back there and the guys I am playing alongside such as Fletch, Cale Hooker, Jake Carlisle and Tayte Pears are all fantastic players which helps as well.”
The 23-year-old has showcased his ability at both ends of the ground during his five seasons at AFL level but is ready to settle down on one position on the ground.
“It would be nice to settle down in one position but for me I am pretty happy to play where I am told to play,” Hurley said.
“If it is up forward so be it, if it is down back well that is great but I guess it depends on injuries and match ups.”
“I am pretty easy and flexible to go either end but it would be nice to settle down back.”
With the move of Hurley down back along with the loss of Stewart Crameri and Scott Gumbleton in the off-season many questions remain about the Bombers forward line setup.
“Jason Winderlich has been flying on the track as has Chappy so those two will be a good avenue towards goal.”
“It wouldn’t surprise me if big Jake Carlisle plays a bit forward and kicks a few goals as well.”
“It will be a different sort of a set up but will be a bit exciting.”
Hurley said the change in position did require a change in mind set.
“It changes a lot (your mind set), the whole way you play your footy does a complete 360,” he said.
“For me I found it hard in the forward line knowing where to go and where to run.”
“In the back line you get to play on a man and if you play on the good players they take you to the ball.”
