Essendon forward Jason Winderlich has been cleared of serious damage to his right knee after limping from the field late in Saturday night’s win over the Bulldogs.
Club doctor Bruce Reid confirmed on Tuesday there was no structural damage to the 2x-year-old’s knee.
“We are very lucky with Jase, anything could have happened but it is on his good knee,” Reid said.
“The mechanism could have been a cruciate but in fact there is no structural damage inside his knee at all.”
“It is very good news because if his lateral ligament is at the lower end then were really concentrating on the joint.”
Reid said the live wire forward would undergo scans to determine the extent of damage to bones surrounding the knee joint.
“We are doing a scan and what we expect it to show is a strain of the lateral ligament and more likely the tibia and fibula joint which is below the knee.”
“We are not expecting a crack or fracture which is the main reason for doing that scan.”
The prognosis looks good for Winderlich who pending scan results could be a chance to take on the Lions on Saturday afternoon.
“He would be pretty lucky to get up for this week but we are not talking six or seven weeks,” Reid said.
“We are looking more around the none, one, two or three week mark at this stage.”
Jackson Merrett is expected to line up after being substituted out of the match against the Bulldogs with a corked thigh.
“There are no concerns, he was just a decent lateral cork and it was restricting him so he was the one to substitute,” Reid said.
David Myers is continuing to recover well from a minor hamstring strain and is expected to line up against Sydney in Round 9.
Tayte Pears will miss the next four weeks after straining a calf muscle during the VFL match on the weekend.
Will Hams will continue to make strong progress in his return from a calf concern and will increase his training load over the next fortnight.
