Midfielder Dyson Heppell is continuing his strong progress on the training track in what has been one of his best pre-season campaigns since joining the club in 2011.

Heppell, who finished third in the Crichton Medal, had his 2013 season cut short due to foot surgery before the final match of the season.

Assistant coach Matthew Egan said the 21-year-old was one of the many standouts since the club began pre-season training in November.

“I think Dyson Heppell is having a really good pre-season so far he is getting a lot of the ball and I think his leadership has really stepped up.”

“It has been good to see some experience through the midfield with guys like Jobe (Watson) and Chappy (Paul Chapman) impressing.”

“I have really enjoyed watching Chappy play, he is a great attacking decision maker and causing the backs a lot of trouble at the moment.”

Chapman, who played just eight matches for Geelong last season, is continuing to impress on the training track having not missed a session since beginning training with the Bombers.

Having taken over as defensive coach for the 2014 season Egan has high hopes for two young Bomber halfbacks.

“For the young players I am really enjoying some half backs in Jason Ashby and Marty Gleeson,” Egan said.

“Hopefully we see a few games out of them this year, they have shown us a lot so far on the training track.”

Senior assistant coach Simon Goodwin last week praised the pre-season form of midfielder David Zaharakis who he said had been 'training hard to get himseld ready for the start of the season'.
