Essendon will take a cautious approach with Michael Hurley this week as he recovers from concussion ahead of Saturday night’s Dreamtime at the G match against Richmond.

Hurley was subbed off early in the first quarter on Saturday against Brisbane after hitting his head on the ground when tackled by Brisbane defender Daniel Merrett.

Football Operations Manager Steve Alessio said the club would keep a close eye on Hurley’s condition throughout the week.

“After the game he completed all the tests well, he seemed ok but with these things especially concussion you need to just tread carefully and we will see how he goes during the week,” Alessio said.

“Obviously with concussion you need to treat it very cautiously so we will be guided over the next couple of days as to how he comes along.”

Alessio said Hurley was a key component to the Bombers forward line set up..

“Hurls is great for us in terms of the structure of our forward line, the way he competes and the way he brings other players into the game.”

“He is a vitally important cog in our forward line so let’s hope all goes well this week.”

Courtenay Dempsey looks set to return to the senior team after spending a week at VFL level for not adhering to rehabilitation protocol.

“Courtenay was good over the weekend, he went back, worked hard and showed some good leadership in the VFL,” Alessio said.

“We hope he show that kind of leadership on the track this week to put his name up for selection this weekend against Richmond.”

Scott Gumbleton could also be included in the team for this weekend’s match after being rested.

Coach James Hird revealed on Friday Gumbleton was rested as all of his indicators showed he was at risk of injury.

Allesio said he expected Gumbleton to be available to take on Richmond should he be called upon.

“We are just really mindful with Scotty, we know the history with him in terms of his body,” he said.

“He has got it right over the pre-season, is starting to string some games together and we want to make sure that he is fit and ready to go throughout the season.”

“We are really conscious of his loads, really conscious of his body and we have a really good dialogue with him in regards to managingthat with last weekend being part of that process.”

Speedster Alwyn Davey is unlikely to play against the Tigers as he continues his rehabilitation from a low-grade hamstring injury suffered against Geelong.

“We are confident that if not this week hopefully a return the week after for Alwyn if all goes well.”
