The club’s famous Watson family will again make history this weekend when Jobe embarks on playing his 158th game after father Tim played 307 for Essendon. The pair will draw level in seventh spot with the Whitten family in the game’s history for most matches by a father/son pair.
The Watson’s sit behind another famous Essendon father/son combination– Ken and Dustin Fletcher – on 632 games comprising 264 games for Ken and 368 games for Dustin who sit in first place for the record in the game’s history.
The famous family names who join the Watson’s in the history books include the Fletcher’s (Ken and Dustin), Tuck (Michael and Shane), Silvagni (Sergio and Stephen), Cloke (David and Travis), Scarlett (John and Matthew), Ablett (Gary snr and Gary jnr), Whitten (Ted snr and Ted jnr), Watson (Tim and Jobe), Tuck (Michael and Travis), and Richardson (Wayne and Mark).
Last year, Jobe capped off a magnificent season by winning the Brownlow Medal – the Bombers’ first since James Hird shared the award with Michael Voss in 1996.
The skipper was also the runaway winner of the Crichton Medal last year, his third best and fairest in the past four seasons and was named the best captain in the competition by AFL Players’ Association.
Jobe’s father Tim was also a champion for the Essendon Football Club. The fourth youngest player to ever play in the VFL/AFL competition who turned in to a former captain and premiership player, Tim played 307 games and booted 335 goals in his 15-year illustrious career.
