Will Snelling says he can form a powerful combination with star teammate Devon Smith in the Bombers’ attacking half this season.
The former Port Adelaide rookie was signed as a mid-season replacement for the injured Smith last year from SANFL club West Adelaide, booting five goals and averaging 17 disposals from four games to earn a contract for 2020.
Despite Smith’s return, Snelling has held his position in Essendon’s senior line-up, making an impact in the Bombers’ Marsh Community Series wins over West Coast (22 disposals, two goals) and Geelong, and round one victory over Fremantle (17 disposals, one goal).
The 22-year-old said he and Smith, who share striking similarities in style and stature, had struck the right balance.
“It’s been quite interesting across the pre-season to see how the pieces fit together now that Dev’s returned. It’s great to have him back,” Snelling said.
“It’s been a bit of a work in progress, and it’s great for me and him that we’re able to work together in the same team. We bring different strengths to the team, and that’s what we’re focused on at the moment – how we can work together for our best balance in the team, whether that’s forward or midfield.
“He’s definitely one I look up to, given he’s played a bit of forward and mid. He’s done everything, and he’s a similar size. Particularly this year, playing pre-dominantly forward, it’s been great to talk to blokes like him.”
Snelling spent the AFL lockdown period in his native South Australia, returning to the club ahead of the season restart with a greater appreciation of his second crack in the big league.
“I’m really grateful. The last eight weeks have given me a lot of perspective about just how fortunate I am,” he said.
“Speaking to a few boys back in the SANFL, they’re not sure what their season is going to look like. To reflect on the position I’m in now, it’s great. To even get a season away, I’m really grateful for that. It makes you appreciate how much we miss playing the game, but also the fans.”
