Historian Gregor McCaskie takes snapshot look at the Whitten Cup which will this weekend once again be played for when Essendon take on the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium.

Traditional two handled silver cup on wooden base.

Named after Bulldog great Ted Whitten and played 321 games for the Bulldogs between 1951 and 1970.

The cup has been played for at alternate home games between Essendon and Western Bulldogs since 1995 with Essendon home games in odd years and Bulldogs in even years.

It has been played for in seasons where there has been only one game irrespective of who’s home game it has been.

Essendon currently holds the cup after winning it in the only time the two teams met in 2013.
