Former Essendon champion Terry Daniher has accepted an assistant coaching role with the Collingwood Football Club. Daniher has spent the past four years on the Essendon coaching panel, assisting with the seniors and coaching the club’s VFL side. He took the Essendon reserves to a premiership in 1999.

“I fully understand Terry’s decision. He sees it as the logical next step in his coaching career and this club has always encouraged its staff to further their careers when the right opportunity presents itself. He will be missed but we wish him well,” Essendon chief executive Peter Jackson said.

“On behalf of the club I would like to thank him for his invaluable input over the past four years. Terry will always be a great Essendon person and he is always more than welcome at this club.”

Daniher felt the opportunity at Collingwood was too good to pass up.

“I just thought this was a very good opportunity for me. I played most of my football under Kevin Sheedy and have done all my coaching at AFL level with him. To further myself as a coach I thought the time was right to see how it is done at other clubs,” Daniher said.

“Essendon Football Club will always be home and it wasn’t an easy decision to make. The club’s VFL venture with Bendigo will be very exciting and I would have liked to have been part of that because I really believe it will be a great success. But at the end of the day I think I have made the correct decision for me.”

“I want to thank all my colleagues for their support over the past few years. It has been an enjoyable place to work and I wish them all the best for the season ahead.”
