Essendon Football Club would like to extend its deepest condolences to the Tobias family following the sad passing of long time club trainer Bob Tobias, aged 71.

Tobias was a trainer with the Bombers for over 20 years including the 1993 and 2000 premiership seasons.

Former premiership player Steve Alessio said Tobias was loved by all of the players during his time at the club.

“Bob was a great man who always loved to have a joke and a chat with the guys,” Alessio said.

“He was an integral part of the trainers for so many years and was always good at his craft in terms of providing the support and level of expertise for the players.”

“Bob was much loved, good at his role and a very important part of our tight knit trainer group over the years.”

Head trainer Charlie Italia, who worked along Tobias for more than 20 years, described him as a ‘gentle giant’.

“Trainers are a very unique close group, majority of the trainers at the Essendon Football Club have been there for more than 25 years,” Italia said.

“He was a real gentle giant, I never ever saw him angry or frustrated.”

“He was a typical trainer, they have to be a special quality and he certainly had that.”

Essendon players will wear black arm bands during Friday night’s match against Geelong in honour of Tobias.
