Exciting Essendon recruit Jake Stringer returned to his explosive best with a thrilling four-goal performance to get the Bombers back on track in their strong victory over Port Adelaide.

The man nicknamed “The Package” showed a full bag of tricks in the impressive win in what was his best performance to date in the red and black.

Stringer proved the difference in the 22-point victory, displaying poise and power to show Essendon fans just what he is capable of.

The former Bulldog reserved his best goal for last, snapping truly from a near-impossible angle in the final term and celebrating accordingly with the Bombers faithful.

Stringer said he was grateful for the support his new fans have thrown behind him since he arrived at the club in the off-season.

“It’s always good when you’re winning and everything’s going well, but they continually rock up and show support and have been wonderful to me since I’ve come here, so I can’t thank them enough,” Stringer said post-match.

The 23-year-old has spent a large portion of his brief time with Essendon in the midfield, but said he was thrilled to return to his more familiar role in attack with fellow forward Cale Hooker spending the game in defence.

“I still spent a bit of time in the midfield, but I knew with Hooksy going back that I’d probably spend a bit more time forward, which I was excited about.

“I’ve played there for five years, so I knew if I could get down there and put some pressure on things would turn around for me.”

After starting each of their first three games of the season slowly, Stringer said it was important for the Bombers to put the previously undefeated Power on the back foot early in the contest.

Essendon did just that, booting the first three majors of the game and subsequently leading at every change for its second win of the season.

“Any time you can get off to a good start, no matter who you’re playing, it’s pivotal for the whole game,” Stringer said.

“It can either get your tail up or it can flatten you a little bit, so to be able to start really well was really impressive.”

Stringer said it was great to get back on track after a tough fortnight of successive losses, but said the side’s attention would quickly turn to its blockbuster Anzac Day clash against an in-form Collingwood.

“It’s been a difficult couple of weeks for the boys, so to be able to bounce back and get a good win (was good).

“But in saying that, it’s a long season, so we’ve got to make sure we get back to work this week and really push forward for Anzac Day.”

The 2015 All Australian heaped praise on Essendon debutant Matt Guelfi, who impressed in his first game with 17-disposals and relentless repeated efforts.

“We just said to him ‘come in and just play your role’ and he did that and some more, which is terrific for him and he’s got a big future in front of him.

“He’s one of those kids that will just keep putting his head down (and) bum up and he’ll have a good future.”
