To celebrate the unveiling of The Hangar, Essendon Football Club has been counting down the 10 best ‘hangars’ ever taken in the red and black.
The time has finally come to unveil our pick for the best ‘hangar’ taken for Essendon and there was never any doubt that Gary Moorcroft would be the rightful winner.
The premiership-winning Bomber scaled ridiculous heights to rake in a rare right-foot snap from Scott Lucas in a simply unforgettable mark.
When Moorcroft pinched the ball out of the sky while standing tippy-toed on Bulldog Brad Johnson’s back his, the commentary team knew how special the moment was.
“That is going to pub walls for the next 100 years,” Dermott Brereton said.
“I’ll tell you how good it is, it’ll be on CNN,” Bruce McAvaney added.
The small forward then converted the subsequent set-shot to boot his sixth goal of the first-half in an astonishing performance.
The mark did take its toll on Moorcroft, who revealed years later that he suffered a fractured hip as he landed after taking the “Mark of the Century”.
“I actually cracked my hip, but it took probably eight months to find the injury,” Moorcroft said.
The actual bone ended up dislodging, so I had to go in for an operation and it took me a long time to get over that.”
It was a ‘hangar’ that may never be repeated, so treat yourself to another replay, you know you want to.
