The Essendon Football Club today said that senior-listed player Nathan Lovett-Murray has been charged with driving while unlicensed and possessing a drug of dependence.
A single ecstasy tablet was allegedly found in Lovett-Murray’s place of residence during a police search yesterday, as part of a wider operation.
He had failed to have his licence renewed when it expired on July 7.
Lovett-Murray today told the club he would vigorously contest the possession charge when it comes to court in October.
Essendon managing director Peter Jackson said the club could not comment extensively on the details of the matter given it is before the courts.
“This is a serious matter and we, as a club, are treating it as such,” Jackson said.
“However, there must also be a presumption of innocence and Nathan is determined to contest the charge.
“Understanding the process that has unfolded, the character of Nathan and the work he does in the community, the Essendon Football Club intends to support him in this matter and as such he will continue to train and play.
“It is now a legal matter which will run its course over the next few months.""

Jackson said Lovett-Murray has requested he undergo an AFL hair, blood and urine testing to prove he doesn't use drugs.
Essendon has kept the AFL fully briefed. The club and Lovett-Murray will be making no further comment.
