There was a plethora of talent on show when three Essendon players journeyed to the Northern Territory to watch the Tiwi Bombers’ first-round clash with Wanderers.
The Bombers flew out of the blocks with a strong start in the stifling conditions at Darwin’s TIO Stadium on October 6, but ultimately ran out of legs to fall short by 19 points.
While the Bombers couldn’t hold on for victory, they certainly put on a show in front of Michael Hurley, Mason Redman and Ben McNiece, thrilling the crowd with their attacking flare and line-breaking style.
Essendon Academies Manager Harmit Singh played in the match, labeling it the “hottest game” he has ever played in, and said he is hopeful some of his teammates from the game could take the step to the top level.
“I’ve played about 25/30 games here now, but that 2.30pm time slot is definitely a difficult time slot coming from Melbourne,” Singh said.
“But it was exciting and, as we all saw, there’s some special talents that are playing and I think one or two of those guys could potentially get on (AFL) lists over the next few years.
“Fingers crossed, it would be nice to see another Tiwi Islander on our list.”
