Essendon’s chances of playing finals in 2014 remain a strong possibility after a narrow two-point victory over Port Adelaide on Saturday night.

The win puts the Bombers just one win outside of the top eight with a pivotal clash against Collingwood next Sunday afternoon at the MCG looming.

Midfielder David Myers said after the win the importance of the victory over the Power was not lost on the playing group.

“It is that type of year where you need to keep winning because everyone is there or there abouts,” Myers said.

“If you drop a few games you will be out of it pretty quickly so it is great to get the win.”

“We have eight or nine game left now so hopefully we can really get it going and head towards the finals if we can.”

Myers said the win over Port Adelaide ranked as one of the best he had been involved in during his time at the club.

“Away wins are awesome so to do it over here with the loud crowd and all of that sort of thing was great.”

“We haven’t been playing our best footy so to get across the line the boys are absolutely rapt.”

“All interstate games you have to get off to a good start because if you don’t it makes it pretty tough after that.”

“We put the pressure on them early, it always makes the crowd go a bit quieter so you are then able to focus on playing footy after that.”

The big-bodied midfielder said it was exciting to see the team show their ability to hold on late in another tight game.

“We have obviously lost a few games this year from the field not being set up late in games and it has cost us,” Myers said.

“Finally tonight we got it sorted, we needed to and we got the result so hopefully we can keep doing that over the rest of the year.”

Myers urged all Bomber fans to get to the MCG on Sunday afternoon as the Dons look to crack inside the top eight with a win over the Magpies.

“It will be great to get back in front of our supporters and get them back in our corner,” he said

“Hopefully we can have a good showing against Collingwood and I am really looking forward to it.”
