The countdown to season 2002 is on in earnest with the Wizard Cup competition now in full swing. In our continuing Engine Room series we look at the senior listed players and pin-point their roles in the upcoming season. Today we take a look at DEAN SOLOMON. Solomon will be a key figure in any Essendon success this season given the crucial role he plays in the Bombers' defence. Solomon can play as a tall or medium-sized defender thanks to his ability in the air and at ground level. It is this versatility that makes him such a vital asset.

Never more evident was Solomon's versatility than in the 2001 Qualifying Final against Richmond. Solomon was aksed to take on tall Richmond forwards Matthew Richardson and Brad Ottens. He did the job brilliantly and was lauded by all who witnessed his efforts. It ensured the Bombers proceeded to another Preliminary Final.

Solomon is noted for his fearless attack on the football and any opposition player who happens to be in possession. The Broken Hill-youngster puts his body in where others would take backward step and it inspires thise around him. It came as no surprise to anyone when he was voted Essendon's Most Courageous Player for season 2001.

Solomon played 24 games for the Bombers last year and averaged 13.7 possessions per game. It was an almost identical return to that of season 2000. Solomon did however imporve markedly in other aspects of his football. He played one less game yet accumulated 18 more tackles in 2001 than in the season prior.

What will his role be on match day?

Solomon will again play predominantly across the half back line - whether he plays on a tall or a medium-sized forward will depend on match-ups. His role will be to let opposition forwards know he is about and to be a physical as possible. He may also be given the ocassional run in the mid-field where he can be very effective in bursts.

What will the coaches expect on match day?

The coaching staff will want to see Solomon really stamp himself on games and they will want to see it happen early in the season. They will want Solomon to win as many hard balls as possible in the back half and create opportunities for the runners around him. They will want to be able to put Solomon on an opposition forward and be certain one avenue to goal has been shut down.
