Essendon midfielder David Myers is finally fit and ready to make his return to senior football.
The club has been without his services after the hard- at- it midfielder injured his shoulder in the early stages of this year’s season opener against the Swans.
Coach James Hird is excited by Myers’ return believing the 26- year old will be important to the team’s midfield structure.
“He only played 30 seconds of the first game so it has been a while,” Hird said.
“But it’s great to have a strong, inside midfielder back in the side.”
Myers was close to returning from a shoulder injury a month ago, but his comeback was delayed after he suffered a minor knee injury.
Now, with some strong games of VFL under his belt – including a 29 possession effort last week against Werribee, Myers is ready to step it up to the AFL.
The Bombers have seen a host of senior players return over the last few weeks in what has been a season riddled by injuries.
Currently missing the services of key midfielder Jobe Watson, ruckman Tom Bellchambers and Michael Hurley, the inclusions of players such as Myers and Hocking gives fans a chance to see what a full-strength line-up looks like.
“With (Myers), Hocking and Howlett on the inside we’re starting to look a little bit more like what we thought we would at the start of the year,” Hird said.
“We thought we’d have a really strong contested ball team when we started the year.
“Unfortunately we’ve lost a lot of those players throughout the year.”
David Myers returns along with defender Tayte Pears and midfielder Jake Melksham to take on Adelaide this Saturday afternoon at Etihad Stadium.
