There were a number of potential suitors for Mitch Brown at the National Draft last Tuesday.
The former Cat played 21 games for VFL side Sandringham in 2015.
He averaged 19 possessions and six marks per game.
Those performances, combined with his NAB Challenge exploits where he served as a top-up player for the Bombers, had him on a number of recruiters’ radars.
“I wasn’t really sure but when my name got called out at (pick) 54 I was rapt to be back,” Brown said.
“It was pretty good for us top-up players to get that chance.
“I think I played a decent three games in the NAB Challenge, so I think it set me up for a good year.”
Brown played 15 games with Geelong after being selected in the first round of the 2008 National Draft.
He kicked three goals on debut against Adelaide, a feat he matched in 2014.
His last game came in the six-point semi final loss to North Melbourne at the end of that season.
Geelong used the 196-centimetre player in defence and attack throughout his six seasons at the Club.
Brown continued his role as a swingman with Sandringham in 2015.
In the side’s Semi Final, the 25 year old started in defence but was moved forward. The change paid off with Brown kicking five goals.
It was a similar scenario in the Preliminary Final, with Brown swung from one end of the ground to the other. This time he booted four goals.
“I feel comfortable at both ends so I’m happy to play wherever,” he said.
“Obviously being back in the AFL system is great so I want to play some consistent footy and play as many senior games as I can and help the Essendon Footy Club.”
