Essendon Coach James Hird says the analysis of the club’s football program will play a key role in ensuring the side improves next season.
The analysis will try to gain a deeper understanding of the football program’s structure, processes, resources and investment across its various divisions.
“Any time you’re underperforming, which we have for whatever reason, whether it be related to ASADA, whether it be through injuries, whether it be through other circumstances – whenever you’re not performing, I think it’s important to review and look at areas you can get better,” Hird said.
The analysis will look at internal and external industry stakeholders with former Essendon player Neale Daniher playing a consultative role throughout the process.
“Neale’s obviously been a legend of our football club and then been a successful Melbourne Coach and done a lot of good things at the West Coast Eagles,” Hird said.
“Neale has a lot of integrity, understands the game and a lot of respect amongst all of us, so we welcome him being a part of it.”
The process is expected to be completed by the end of the home and away season.
“I think there’s some areas we need to get better at, to improve at to go up the ladder so we’ll wait and see how that comes out,” Hird said.
“The fact is you win five games when you expect to do better that’s going to put pressure on everyone particularly the Coach.
“That’s what the review’s about - to look at what we’re doing well, what we’re not doing well and to make sure we improve and win more games next year.”
