David Zaharakis is fit and could return next week at the MCG against Hawthorn.
The goal-kicking midfielder hasn’t played since injuring his ankle against Fremantle in round six.
“It was just a little torn ligament in my ankle,” he said.
“It was meant to be two weeks but it’s been five but I’m ready to go now.”
The Bombers have returned to training after a four day mid season break.
“The injury is fine, I’ve just got to get through the sessions,” Zaharakis said.
“I’m keen to put myself up for selection next week, whether its AFL or VFL, I’m just looking forward to playing.”
Dustin Fletcher, Jason Winderlich, Heath Hocking and David Myers are also due to return from injury over the coming weeks.
Their absence has provided opportunities for others to shoulder an increased load with Zach Merrett and Travis Colyer among those to step up so far.
“The strength of any side is competition for spots,” Essendon great Matthew Lloyd said.
Hard at it on-ballers Myers and Hocking have played just three minutes between them this season.
Winderlich is yet to feature at AFL level but has now played two games in the VFL since overcoming a back injury.
“Whether it be forward or back, he just creates so much through his leg speed, decision making – he’s like having a coach out on the ground,” Lloyd said.
“Every side has got injuries so you can’t use that as an excuse but no doubt it’ll really help (the returning players) come the back half of the season.”
