The Essendon VFL side has made some key signings ahead of next season.
VFL Operations Manager Matt Little gives his take on the big name re-signings for the VFL Dons.
James Polkinghorne
“James won our best and fairest this year. What he brings is that AFL experience having played 94 games at that level. He’s a really good leader and has fitted in really well. It was really important for us to get him re-signed. Obviously the draft is coming up and we hope he gets an opportunity there, but if not, he’ll be a quality player for us next year in the VFL.”
Jordan Schroder
“Jordan is a terrific VFL player. He’s won the J.J. Liston Trophy for the best player in the competition in 2013, then in 2014 he won Geelong’s VFL best and fairest. This year he had some issues with his achilles around Christmas time and that set him back. But we expect him, with a good run at it this year, to get back to the form we know he’s capable of.”
Daniel Coghlan
“Daniel’s had a terrific couple of years. If nothing happens in the draft for him, this will be his fourth season with us in the VFL. He came third in our best and fairest in 2014 and then second in 2015. He’s elevated his game to another level in terms of what he’s been able to do inside and outside the contest. He’s also added a string to his bow by kicking some goals, which obviously attracts the eye of recruiters. We’re hopeful he’ll get an opportunity but if not he’s proven to be a really good VFL player and we’re excited about having him back on board.”
