Essendon Coach James Hird says he is in constant talks with injured forward Jake Carlisle.
The 23 year old is yet to commit to the club beyond this season.
“We’re certainly encouraging (Jake) to sign on,” Hird said.
“We speak regularly to Jake and we’ve had several discussions with Jake about staying at Essendon.
“We think his best football will be played here.”
Carlisle has kicked 14 goals in 11 games this season with his best haul being four against St. Kilda.
An elite defender before making the switch forward, Hird said Carlisle's talent and versatility made him a valuable commodity for the club.
“What I love about Michael Hurley, Cale Hooker and Jake Carlisle is that they can play both ends of the ground and are good at it,” Hird said.
“Gone are the days where a player is a one position player and that’s all that he plays. If it doesn’t suit the team then it doesn’t work.”
Carlisle should return from his ankle injury in about two to three weeks.
