Essendon will take its best hand of selections to the National Draft later this month, but new Coach John Worsfold won’t be placing any extra pressure on the Club’s blue chip picks.
The Bombers will head into this year’s draft with two selections in the first round placing them in a good position to secure some quality players.
They also field two second round selections.
“Generally, our top two picks are kids that could impact on the field fairly quickly whether it’s next season or the season after,” Worsfold said.
“But there’s every possibility at least one of these guys might be having an impact and helping the team.
“Longer term – three years plus – we would expect that all four high draftees would be good long term players for the club.”
Worsfold oversaw the West Coast Eagles rebuild after the 2010 season where the team finished last on the ladder.
As a result, the Eagles received pick 4 and pick 26 allowing them to snare the very talented Andrew Gaff and Jack Darling.
Worsfold said these two players provide a great example of what can be achieved if a player’s development isn’t rushed.
“I was at West Coast when we drafted Andrew Gaff and Jack Darling in the same draft and saw them have an impact immediately.
“It was part of building a team – along with those guys – that was going to be finishing high up the ladder, not just having two good, young, talented players."
