Essendon Coach James Hird is confident his players have the talent to match it with Hawthorn when the sides meet at the MCG tomorrow.
The Bombers haven’t beaten the Hawks since 2010 but came within a kick last year.
“They’re a fantastic team, they’ve won the last two premierships, they look like they’re the favourite this year,” Hird said.
“I think our team is well balanced. I think we’ve got a good midfield; our defence was top four last year. And our attack – we’ve got some real talent down there.
“We’re not scared of the game. We understand how good they are but we’re confident we’ll bring a good game as well.”
The match will be the Bombers first home game of the season and a big crowd is expected at the MCG.
“We play the best team in the competition tomorrow. We can’t wait to see all of our supporters there. It’s the first time we’ve played in Melbourne this year, against the arch-enemy in Hawthorn. There’s no reason why all our fans won’t get out and support us and be there for a great game,” Hird said.
Dustin Fletcher will be one of those watching on.
The veteran is nearing the 400 game milestone but will sit out the match because of a sore groin.
“If it was a Grand Final then maybe Fletch would have got himself up for the game. He’s almost 40 and we’ll manage him in that sense and he’ll play a lot of football this year.
“We’ve got a six day break after this game so it was just a matter of managing his load,” Hird said.
Fletcher’s absence opens the door for James Gwilt to make his Essendon debut.
“James has had a really good career at St Kilda and played in Grand Finals and in big games. He’s played under a very good system, so he understands the game. He’s a terrific person, gives his all and is competitive,” Hird said.
