Essendon VFL are flying, winning the last five straight to sit equal first on the ladder after 11 rounds.
It was a gutsy win against a formidable Port Melbourne outfit last weekend, with a number of key Dons stepping up when it counted to get the side over the line.
Here is a look at the standout performers that are firming in line for AFL selection Thursday evening.
Jonathan Giles
The former-Giant has had a relatively solid season in the VFL, playing every game and performing his role well week-to-week. Usually alongside Shaun McKernan, Giles went solo on the weekend against Port Melbourne and played particularly well. He gathered 15 disposals, had 37 hit outs and kicked a goal. He’s booted 12 goals this season, highlighting that he’s capable of pushing forward and hitting the scoreboard.
David Zaharakis
Zaharakis’ return after missing the last six weeks was superb. He looked refreshed and determined for a big backend of 2015. Clearly a class above the rest, the midfielder racked up 28 quality disposals and was among the VFL Dons’ better players. A tick from the Doc in this week’s Recovery Room bring Zaharakis a step closer to a return this week.
Ben Howlett
Howlett was narrowly left out of the AFL side last weekend and was forced to stake his claim for a recall in the VFL, and he did just that. ‘Bobcat’ laid a massive 18 tackles against Port Melbourne, showcasing his excellent attitude. Alongside his monster tackle count, Howlett gathered 19 possessions as well a booting a goal, adding to his comprehensive VFL performance.
Jayden Laverde
Laverde’s improvement is quite remarkable since his first VFL game at the start of the year, which is credit to the coaches for developing his game. The youngster’s ability to read the play, understand the game plan will be an asset if he’s called up to the senior side.
