Elliott Kavanagh’s return to the senior side against Geelong marked a reward for the midfielders hard work, dedication and consistent performances both on and off the field.
After playing only three games in 2014 last season Kavanagh knew the importance of this season. Driven by his strong desire to break into the team, he worked closely with some of the senior players to improve the weak areas of his game and build on his already impressive speed and endurance.
“I’ve been doing a lot of work on the track with the older guys like Jobe and Hepp,” said Kavanagh
“I’ve just been trying to match them and take it to them every training session.”
Averaging 21 disposals, two goals and seven tackles in six games for Essendon VFL, Kavanagh certainly did build a strong case for selection.
The consistent performances put up by the midfielder saw him rewarded with a starting spot in the senior side this past weekend. Kavanagh was both grateful to be selected but more-so to have the opportunity to play a full game, rather than starting as the substitute.
“You want a chance to show what you’re worth and show what you’ve done,” said Kavanagh about being selected in the starting line-up.
“You’ve got the call up because you can play, and that’s what the coaches think.
“You want that opportunity to show and shine and try your best and obviously give a good performance.”
Kavanagh did not disappoint those who put faith in him over the weekend. With 25 disposals, four clearances and three score involvements the versatile player proved to be damaging across the wing and half-forward line on what was otherwise a disappointing night for the club.
However, now in his fourth year at the club, Kavanagh understands that it is not just about simply gathering possessions on the field. Rather, it is ensuring that the whole team is working as one to get the win.
“We’re not focusing on possessions.
“We’re focusing on the way that we want to play and the brand of footy we’re trying to bring to the club.”
Kavanagh is hopeful for another call-up this week as he looks to cement a permanent position in the side.
