Fans can expect to see a much younger Bombers team this week as James Hird revealed his intentions to give some fresh faces a chance.

With injuries to several key senior players including Jobe Watson, Adam Cooney, Paul Chapman and Dustin Fletcher, it will be Essendon’s youth will have the chance to shine.

Hird has put his faith in Essendon’s young players in recent rounds, with last week’s team younger side than St.Kilda.

“With the injuries we’ve got we’ll play a lot of younger players,” Hird said.

“There might be 11-12 players under 50 games this week, we’ll wait and see. There will be at least 10.

“We’ll be a young team again and it’s exciting when you play a young team.

“Playing young does not mean we’re not trying to compete or win, and we still believe we can win the game and win a number of games this year.”

The team came together after last week’s embarrassing loss to have what Hird described as an honest conversation surrounding where the team is heading for the rest of the year with the coach confident the team is clear about what is expected.

“No doubt that we’ll get a much better effort than we did last week,” Hird said.

“It wasn’t a performance that any of us could be proud of; in fact we were all rightly so embarrassed by it. It wasn’t something you’d want to be involved in ever again.

“They’re a group that want to get out there and want to give a performance that they want to make amends for the performance that they gave on Sunday afternoon.”
