Sam Michael’s graduation to the Essendon list started a year ago but finally reached its conclusion today.

He was drafted in to the Bombers squad throughout the 2015 NAB Challenge, while the players with ‘show-cause’ notices sat out.

When those players returned, Michael headed back to Queensland to play in the NEAFL.

A year later and Michael was back training with the Bombers, but his stay this time around will be at least a little longer.

Michael was told today he’d be the Club’s tenth and final new recruit for 2016.

“I’m very excited, it’s still sinking in, I only found out a couple of hours ago,” Michael said.

“I’m really excited about the year ahead and running out there for the Essendon Football Club.

“Coming here there was a few familiar faces within the coaching group and the playing group.

“The guys have been brilliant.  They’ve accepted me coming in and I’ve really enjoyed every minute of training.

“Physically I feel good and ready for the season.”

Michael was originally recruited by the Brisbane Lions and played three games for the club in 2013.

The 22 year old said he hopes some strong performances this season will see him remain an Essendon player beyond 2016.

“I just really want to use my body, compete around the ground and bring that presence to the side whether it’s up forward, in the ruck or as a key defender,” Michael said.

“It’s a perfect opportunity to come in right at the start of the season.

“Hopefully we can surprise a few teams in the footy world and I’m sure we will.”

Michael has been named in the Bombers squad to take on Carlton this Sunday.
