He was later a member of the 1968 Essendon Reserves premiership side in and ran third in the Gardiner medal, for the best player in the VFL.
After leaving Essendon Egan went to Port Adelaide in 1970 and then joined Williamstown in 1971 and 1972 and Scottsdale in Tasmania in 1973. He then became captain-coach of Reservoir-Lakeside in 1974 and 1975 and won the flag in 1975.
Egan returned to Essendon as team manager in 1977 and began a long career at Essendon in a variety of roles. He was team manager for 15 years at a time when the club won the 1984 and 1985 premierships.
He also performed the roles of player liaison, promotions officer, and for twenty seasons was on the club’s match committee, eight as chairman.
Egan was a director when the club elected to move its home games to Docklands and was also a member of the board of directors that made the decision to leave Windy Hill and develop a new training and administration base at Melbourne Airport.
