Essendon has breathed some life back into its season after producing a competitive four-quarter performance to defeat Hawthorn by 43-points at the MCG tonight.

Key forward Michael Hurley showed brilliant form in the Bombers’ win, kicking four majors and marking strongly.

“It is always good to beat Hawthorn and we needed a win so it was a great result,” Hurley said.

“I have been a bit off-colour so it was good to kick a few and take a few marks and it was a fantastic result for the boys who have had a long week.”

The victory will provide the Bombers with some confidence heading into their Round 7 clash with an in-form Port Adelaide.
Hurley said the win will show the emerging group can they can achieve when they execute the game plan properly.

“Our performance was ten-times better today than it has been,” he said.

“It was a four-quarter performance today and we have been playing three in the past so it was good to string four together.

“Knights said just stick to the structures because early on we were good and then we dropped off a little bit but he said if we went back to how we were playing in the first quarter than we could hold them off and it proved true.”

Hurley said the Bombers’ ability to share the load among the players was pivotal to the win.

“It was fantastic to see so many players putting their hands up tonight,” he said.

“Jobe Watson was fantastic in his 100th game and Brent Stanton was impressive too.

“It was good to have Froggy (Alwyn Davey) back after being out for a couple of weeks and the run he provided was fantastic.""
