Essendon Coach John Worsfold says he’s excited but not surprised by Michael Hurley’s decision to remain with the Club.
Hurley has agreed to a new deal that will see him remain in the red and black until at least 2022.
“Obviously we’re all excited here,” Worsfold said.
“We were confident his loyalty and his passion for the Club would shine through.
“We’re not surprised or shocked, but really pleased that he feels he’s absolutely committed to what we’re all trying to achieve together.
“He’s caught up with a few of the players throughout the year and I think he’s got the feeling that they’re enjoying their footy, they’re enjoying some of the things we’re putting in place here at the footy club for long term success.
“Ultimately I think that’s what Michael wanted - to be really confident that he believes he can have some on-field team success at the Essendon Football Club.”
Hurley is the eighth player to recommit to the Club following on from Brent Stanton, Tom Bellchambers, Dyson Heppell, David Myers, Cale Hooker, Heath Hocking and Travis Colyer.
The Bombers will also benefit from their investment in youth.
Last year’s National and Rookie drafts have produced six Essendon debutants so far this year, with Darcy Parish, Michael Hartley, Mitch Brown and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti becoming AFL regulars.
“Our squad will be stronger next year than it is this year and by a fair bit we believe,” Worsfold said.
“Not only in the returning players (but) in where we see Fantasia starting next year as an AFL player as opposed to where everyone thought he was at at the start of this year.
“The same as Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti – we didn’t even know if he would be able to hold up and play AFL footy. So we go into next year with him understanding that side of the game and what he can deliver.
“There is some small examples there of where we’re miles ahead in terms of the squad's capabilities next year.”
