Essendon Chairman Paul Little says the Club’s future is bright despite enduring a season of unwanted off-field attention.
Little used his speech at the Crichton Medal to point to the conclusion of the Club’s football review, a loyal membership base, continued support from commercial partners and the introduction of a new blockbuster game in 2016 as cause for optimism.
He also called on commentators who continue to deride the Club to move on.
“To the football media, we appreciate you have a job to do and play an important role covering our great game,” Little said.
“The majority of you have been fair and balanced and we thank you for that.
“Others have turned this story into something more personal and it is now time for you to stop your recycling of half-truths and irrelevant facts and give the Essendon Football Club and the AFL industry the clear air sought by everyone, other than you.”
Little has stated his attention to stand down when the WADA appeal reaches its conclusion.
“We remain optimistic that the WADA appeal process and outcome will be completed by year end, allowing our players, coaches, staff, supporters, the new Chairman and the new Senior Coach, the chance to finally move on from the events of the past three years,” he said.
“From the day I was asked by David Evans to take on the role as Chairman, I have fully believed in the innocence of the playing group.”
Little congratulated the players on their ability to bind together through a tough time and continue to perform for the fans.
“It has without doubt, been a very difficult and challenging period in our more recent history,” Little said.
“To the playing group and football department, I can’t believe as a Club we managed to remain solid, true to the course and did not splinter under enormous pressure.
“And finally to Essendon members and fans, you are the backbone of this amazing 142 year old Club and you should all be very proud to call yourselves Essendon people.”
