With the official beginning of the 2015 Season fast approaching, Jobe Watson has praised some of the experienced faces that have joined the club over the last few months.
Speaking today at the AFL Captain’s Day, Watson highlighted the benefits of having more experienced players and coaches join the club for the 2015 season.
On the field, 2014 recruits Adam Cooney, Jonathan Giles and James Gwilt add great flexibility across the whole ground and additional depth to an already strong team list.
Watson welcoming their additional understanding and knowledge of the game with open arms.
“We’ve made a conscious effort to bring some experienced players over the last few years who have really added to our group,” said Watson.
“We’ve got guys who can play forward and back in key position roles, and [add] some depth in the midfield.
“I certainly feel as though it’s a very capable group.”
The club also bolstered its already strong coaching group with the addition of two former club champions in Mark Harvey and Matthew Lloyd.
Watson believes that both Harvey and Lloyd have already shown their value to the team in the development of key players.
“To bring someone like Lloydy, who has been the most successful goal kicker at the club and was a champion player, the tutorial he has been able to give Joe, Jake and other forwards you just start to see that coming through.
“Harvs as well. His knowledge being a senior coach elsewhere, and being part of the successful 2000 era.”
With the club in a delicate position, Watson noted that the return of Lloyd, Harvey and Kevin Sheedy is also beneficial for the club’s brand and rich history.
“You look at what’s happened to the club over the last few years, the brand of the club, and it has been impactful on the club.
“When rebuilding a brand it’s important to have those people.
“They’re all passionate Essendon people.”
