Essendon are set to play host to the VFL match-of-the-round this weekend, as they face Collingwood in the annual ANZAC Day weekend clash on Sunday at Windy Hill.
Both teams will be playing for the Bluestar Cup, as well as the best player on the day to be awarded the ‘Bluestar best-on-ground’ Medal.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for the young players to get exposure to this sort of game,” VFL Operations Manager Matthew Little admitted.
“Last year, and the year before, we’ve been beaten in these games and Kyle Martin has won the medal on both occasions. So hopefully now that he’s moved on from Collingwood, it opens it up for one of our guys to win the Bluestar Medal.”
Little declared Sunday’s match a fantastic opportunity for fans to reap the benefits of what VFL footy has to offer.
“We’re hopeful that we will get a really big crowd and the weather holds off and get a few thousand people into Windy Hill.”
“It’s a great opportunity for the greater community to get down and support the team, and even for the kids to get on the ground at half-time and have a kick.”
The match will be broadcast live on Channel Seven from 11.30am, with the first bounce scheduled for 11.42am.
The presentation of the Bluestar Cup to the winning team will be carried out by Bluestar Logistics Chaiman and CEO Muzi Eidehand, while VFL expert and Channel Seven commentator Nigel Carmody will award the ‘Bluestar best-on-ground’ Medal.
