A mixture of ‘excitement’ and ‘simplicity’ paid a part in Essendon’s improved form throughout the last three weeks of the season.
Matthew Egan wanted to bring some enjoyment back to the playing group when he was appointed interim Senior Coach and he also made some adjustments to the game plan.
“I wanted to get some excitement back into the group because the six weeks before that there was some really bad performances,” Egan told SEN this morning.
“Sometimes we try to overcomplicate the game a little bit and we probably throw too much at them.
“I remember when I was playing I used to listen to the defence part of the meeting and then almost zone-out when it was midfield and everything else.
“The game has changed a fair bit but it still comes down to some pretty basic things.
“I kept the game plan really simple and changed a few little things, it wasn’t dramatic things.
“Trying to get even numbers in the forward line was a big one so we had confidence going forward with the ball.”
The side was gallant in matches against Gold Coast and Richmond before ending the season with a three-point win over Collingwood.
Egan said he was proud of the way the players supported each other in the win over the Magpies.
“I’m massive on ‘team-care’ and helping each other and sharing goals,” Egan said.
“I loved on the weekend how there were heaps of opportunities where someone could have had a shot on goal but they saw someone in a better position and there was no hesitation, they just gave the handball – I love seeing that.”
