JAMES Hird has reportedly ruled out coaching in the AFL for at least the next three years, and said coaching at the top level of the game “will probably never happen”.

The Essendon legend's comments, reported in Friday’s Herald Sun newspaper, come after he admitted earlier this week that he wanted to coach the Bombers, a move that placed enormous pressure on incumbent Matthew Knights.

Hird told the newspaper he was committed to his sports marketing company Gemba and his media work.

"I won't be coaching in the next three to five years, and that might mean I never do," he said.

"I understand the speculation has been destabilising for both (coach) Matthew Knights and the club, and I want to put that to bed," Hird said.

"I don't think the on-going speculation is fair on David Evans or Matthew Knights."
