As part of the 30th anniversary of the 1984/1985 premierships, essendonfc.com.au is privileged to release a series of reflective profiles showcasing the players who featured in those back-to-back flags – a period that remains one of the high points in the proud 142-year history of the Essendon Football Club.

Garry Foulds maintained a low profile throughout his 300-game career, gaining a reputation as one of the most underrated contributors in the ‘84/’85 premierships.

“When I played at Essendon I wasn't in the media much and it suited me and enabled me to concentrate on football. I was happy playing the game. I enjoyed playing and the people I played with and the friends I made out of football,” Foulds said.

Foulds, who sits fifth on Essendon’s all time games played list, was one of the Bombers’ best ball users, never seeming rushed by his opponents.

Throughout his 15-year career, Foulds earned All-Australian and Victorian honours but holds the 1984 premiership as “probably his greatest memory” and “more satisfying than playing 300 games”.

Then coach, Kevin Sheedy, described Foulds as “a very smart footballer — not a crash and bang type of player but very calculating.  He was unselfish, a good team man.”
