Re-signed Essendon big man Shaun McKernan says he’s ready to prove the doubters wrong in 2016.
The former Adelaide Crow signed a new contract today after joining the Bombers as a rookie at the end of last year.
He was elevated on to the senior list on two separate occasions in 2015 and played nine AFL games.
“When I got picked up it was only a rookie deal and it was only one year so I think for me it sort of said, you’ve got to get into gear and play some good footy,” McKernan said.
“I’m still under no illusions, I know I’ve still got a lot of work to do.
“I know there are a lot of people that probably still think I don’t belong here and have a lot of doubt, but I’m looking forward to the challenge and can’t wait to prove other people wrong.”
McKernan kicked six goals last season, including five in the final three matches.
With Matthew Leuenberger landing at the Bombers and Tom Bellchambers back to full fitness, McKernan said he was prepared to spend more time in the forward line.
“I probably will look to play more forward and pinch hit in the ruck, which suits me more anyway,” he said.
“I probably like playing forward more and trying to kick a few goals but at the same time I still do like playing in the ruck.”
McKernan has played 43 AFL games under three different senior coaches.
The 25 year old said he is looking forward to working under John Worsfold.
“He’s highlighted parts of my game he wants me to work on, so I’ll be looking to do that,” McKernan said.
“He’s been really good so far.
“He’ll be really good for the group and the game style he wants us to play will be really good I think.”
