The willingness to try players in new roles in 2016 has armed the Bombers with a host of versatile options for next season.
Cale Hooker and Michael Hurley are proven performers in multiple positions but complementing them will be Mitch Brown, Mark Baguley and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti who all spent time at both ends of the ground this season.
While second year player, Kyle Langford, had a taste of everything.
In the NAB Challenge he ran with Patrick Dangerfield. Then when the home and away season began he rotated between half forward and in the midfield. He even spent a short time in defence against Adelaide.
“His mindset around being open to trying different things was good,” Worsfold told Bomber Radio.
“He didn’t just start to get frustrated. In the pre-season we did throw him through the midfield to have a look at him there.
“Then midway through the year we sent him back into the VFL to go full time into the midfield and almost be the main man in there. We saw the talent he’s got – he was getting in the mid 20’s, high 20’s for possessions and a lot of clearances.”
Langford played 17 AFL games for the season, after eight in his first year. He booted three goals and took nine marks in the final game of the year against Carlton.
“We’re really pleased with his development and he’s got a lot of development to go yet, in terms of AFL footy and definitely as an AFL midfielder, but he's shown signs to say that’s where he should be aiming to get to,” Worsfold said.
Patrick Ambrose got to sample life in a new position in 2016.
After spending the bulk of his first 32 games in attack, Ambrose was moved into defence.
He played 18 games and stood some of the game's best forwards including Tom Lynch, Josh Kennedy, Jeremy Cameron and Jack Riewoldt (whom he kept goalless).
“We identified very early on his best chance to become a consistent AFL footballer was as a defender,” Worsfold said.
“Harves (Line Coach Mark Harvey) took control of Patty’s development and they worked really closely together.
“Patty is just a kid who wants to learn and wants to get the best out of himself, so he really grew in that role and grew the trust of the selectors in terms of the roles he was given.
“He played on some of the best forwards in the game.
“Patty has really made a position for himself in the side.”
