Earlier this year, 200 CFA members marched around the MCG to the applause of thousands, thanks to the efforts of Geelong and Essendon Football Clubs, as well as legendary AFL player and coach Kevin Sheedy.
This weekend, around 200 CFA and SES volunteers got to repay the favour as Sheedy took to the stage as guest speaker at the 2016 Volunteer Forum in Lorne.
Talking up the value of teamwork and providing some inspiration ahead of the summer fire season, Sheedy came to the forum as part of the Country Game initiative, which has brought together CFA in partnership with Geelong and Essendon.
The centrepiece of the partnership was the lap of honour around the MCG ahead of the Round 4 match-up between Geelong and Essendon, but the two clubs also raised $5000 for CFA by auctioning off their Country Game jerseys.
Today, at Geelong’s Chairman’s Lunch at Etihad Stadium, the two clubs presented CFA Assistant Chief Officer Bob Barry with a cheque and commemorative Sherrin.
“There was a huge sense of pride felt by our members as they marched around the MCG,” ACO Barry said.
“Our members do a tough job for the communities they serve. There is no doubt Victorians are grateful for the work they do but to hear the MCG stand and applaud was something special. It’s an experience they will not forget anytime soon.
“We are lucky to have had the benefit of this partnership and CFA looks forward to working with both Geelong and Essendon next year.”
Sheedy said the partnership with the CFA was an important part of the Country Game program.
“The CFA brigade in every country town, similar to the local football club, represents the very essence of Australian values and culture and during difficult times, is the fabric that keeps a community together,” he said.
“The CFA volunteers play a vital role in every community across Australia and it is only fitting we recognise their courage and commitment as part of the Country Game activities each year.”
ACO Barry said the money raised would go towards initiatives to support CFA volunteers.
