Essendon has recalled James Kelly for the match against Geelong on Sunday.

Kelly is one of five inclusions into the squad that will be trimmed to 22 on Friday.

Mitch Brown returns after overcoming a groin problem, alongside Sam Grimley, Jackson Merrett and Mason Redman.

Sam Michael and the rested Orazio Fantasia miss out.

Kelly was rested from last week’s match against Adelaide.

The three-time premiership player has played 16 games this season and is ranked in the top five at the Club for disposals and tackles.

Coach John Worsfold said Kelly has also played an important mentoring role.

“He’s got a great nature in terms of being able to share his experience with the players without feeling like he’s overbearing or talking over the top of anyone,” Worsfold said.

“He’s been wonderful, not only in our team meetings, but individually giving players some feedback and encouragement along the way."

Merrett returns to the line up for the first time since round 15.

Worsfold said the Bombers had opted to go with some more experienced players in wing roles in recent weeks, but Merrett's VFL form had earned him a recall.

“Jacko has been in really good form and he was a little bit unlucky to go out of the team a few weeks ago when we went for more senior wingmen,” Worsfold said.

“He runs well, he uses the ball well and just that effort and intensity we want to see from him.”
