Matthew Leuenberger says the team missed an opportunity to register their second win of the season in the match against GWS on Sunday.

The Bombers led for most of the game, but the Giants booted ten goals to three after half time to secure the win.

The ruckman says Coach John Worsfold was proud of the team’s performance but disappointed not to secure the victory.

“He gave us a pat on the back, it was a good effort, but he stopped short pretty quickly and said we need to start winning,” Leuenberger said.

“Today was probably an opportunity that we let slip because we were in it for three quarters and in the last we got overran.

“Make no mistake we’re trying to win and that’s basically all he talked about – ‘let’s just do everything we can to try and find our next win’.”

Leuenberger’s combination with fellow ruckman Mark Jamar was influential throughout the game as the Bombers edged GWS at the stoppages.

“He plays a different style to me so he opens up the other side of the centre circle when he goes in there which is good for the mids,” Leuenberger said.

“He’s a big body, very crash and bash whereas I’m sort of athletic and I like to run long and hard.”

Jamar and Leuenberger were also damaging when they spent time in the forward line with the pair kicking four goals between them.

“That’s a great outcome if both of us can hit the scoreboard and controlling the air then that’s a great result,” Leuenberger said.

“Not having to do it one out makes it easier for me.”

Leuenberger has played 12 of the Bombers 13 games so far this season.

The former Brisbane Lions player has battled injury throughout his ten year career, but is enjoying the continuity he’s found in his first season at the Bombers.

“I’m thrilled to be playing,” he said.

“There is definitely some things to work on, some weeks I feel like I’ve done really well and others I sort of walk away going there is still a bit to go.”
