Sam Michael has been included in the 25-man squad for the match against St Kilda on Sunday at Etihad Stadium.
The final line-up will be named on Friday.
John Worsfold said Michael can cover a number of positions.
“He’s very much a versatile player for us, he’s been playing key back in the VFL but we definitely think he has potential to develop as a ruckman who can also play forward,” Worsfold said.
“He gives us a lot of flexibility in the squad this week and over the course of this year we will try to have a look at him in a variety of positions.”
Michael signed with the Club early this year and played a number of matches throughout the NAB Challenge.
The 23 year-old played three matches with the Lions between 2013 and 2014 and spent last year playing with NEAFL club Redland.
Michael has been used largely as a key defender in the VFL this season, playing all six matches.
A solid run of VFL form from Marty Gleeson and Jackson Merrett could also see the pair included in the final 22.
“Marty has been back in the VFL with a mantra to go back and just work really hard and get in the flow of the game, get more involved and he has done that really well,” Worsfold said.
“He’s had plenty of the football and a lot of marks across half back so he has certainly earned his spot back in the squad.”
Merrett has been banging the door down after a standout five weeks back in the VFL.
The 23 year-old has been consistent picking up 24, 21, 25, 30 and 22 disposals.
“Merrett is a really good running player who uses the ball well,” Worsfold said.
“We lost (Jonathan) Simpkin a couple of weeks ago and Jackson is looking to try and grab a wing spot or half forward for us.
“His form again has been really solid, he has been emergency for a couple of weeks in a row and trying to break into the side – he’s pushing up closer than ever.”
