Essendon’s new recruits weren’t the only people hitting the classroom in recent weeks to study the finer points of the game.

While the full-time footballers continue their build up to the first NAB Challenge match this Sunday, the Bombers also introduced more than 600 international students at Melbourne’s RMIT University to the intricacies of Australian Rules.

It’s all part of the Club’s GLoBALL program – an initiative that aims to connect international students with the broader community through football.

“We’ll engage with more than 12,000 students across the year through this program,” Essendon’s Community Programs Manager Bernard Shepheard said.

“We show the students the basics like how to kick and handball and we also take them through some videos to explain the rules of the game.

“Football has such a strong presence throughout this state and by taking the time to explain the nuances of the game, students new to the country can gain a greater sense of belonging.”

Students involved in the GLoBALL program will also have the opportunity to attend AFL matches throughout the season where they will sit alongside ambassadors who will provide further tuition on the game.
