Essendon Legend, Kevin Sheedy, says the Bombers can replicate the performance of the Western Bulldogs by winning the premiership from the lower half of the top eight.
The Dons finished in seventh place on the ladder, the same position the Bulldogs mounted their September charge from last year.
“I think the Bombers have just as much chance as anybody in the eight,” Sheedy said.
“The finals present a whole new ball game and I think that’s exciting about our game.
“I’d say we would nearly have our best side in, which is great to have that extra week for the boys to get themselves ready for the game.
“The Western Bulldogs last year won it from seventh, so anything can happen with this week off and anything can happen in a game.
“Our boys are very keen and very confident.”
Earlier this week, Joe Daniher, Michael Hurley and Zach Merrett were named in the All-Australian side.
Sheedy said the trio could form the building blocks from which the Club can pursue sustained success in the coming seasons.
“It’s a fantastic achievement. They are young guys ready to build this team’s future,” he said.
“They can already play well in Sydney so they know they can handle the ground.”
At least seven busloads of fans will travel to the SCG to cheer on the Dons as they go head-to-head with the Swans.
The Bombers broke their membership record earlier this season and Sheedy said that support has played a key role in the Club’s resurgence.
“Having 67,000 members is amazing,” Sheedy said.
“I think that lifts the spirits of the players when they run out there, they know they have a full stadium.”
