Aaron Francis has shed about four kilograms but knows the hard work is only just beginning.
The number six pick from last year’s National Draft spent the off-season training alongside teammates Kyle Langford and Alex Morgan.
Essendon’s playing group have been put through some searching sessions in recent weeks and while Francis has felt the benefit of his extra work, he knows it is something he must continue.
“I’ve lost a fair bit of weight over the off-season and hopefully that will hold me in good stead going forward,” Francis said.
“Having them (Morgan and Langford) with me running and boxing really pushed me because they’re obviously pretty fit.
“Obviously there is still a long way to go for me, I’m still not where I need to be in terms of my fitness, or body weight and body muscle so I’ve still got a long way to go.”
Francis played three games in his first season including a 16 disposal and seven-mark effort against Brisbane in his AFL debut.
The 19 year old said the taste of senior football provided a clearer picture of the standards he needs to reach.
“That put me in a place where I know where I need to be and where my fitness level needs to be at,” Francis said.
“That set me up for a good off-season and now during the pre-season I know what targets to hit with my B3 and B4 (high intensity) running."
Francis was used in attack and defence throughout his first season, but is uncertain about the role he’ll perform throughout 2017.
“I could play up forward, could play down back and hopefully if I really get there maybe through the midfield so I’m still not really sure at the moment,” Francis said.
“I’d like to settle down in one position (eventually) but I’m happy to play anywhere (for now).”
